The presentation launching casket for the light cruiser Aurora (1936) in Portsmouth Dockyard, Hampshire.
A study of the presentation launching casket made for the launch of the light cruiser Aurora (1936) by Lady Fisher at Portsmouth Dockyard. The wooden casket is viewed from the left front corner and is rectangular, stands on four small feet and carved on the face of the casket is a representation of the ship's badge, a rising sun over a sea horizon, with the motto "Post Tenebrax Lux" (After darkness, light). An heraldic leaf design is carved on the end of the casket and attached to each corner is an upright, limbless, bird-headed, winged sea-griffin. The handle on the hinged lid of the casket is an open cockleshell.
