On board a V & W class destroyer in No. 8 Dry Dock, Portsmouth Dockyard, looking forward and to starboard from the quarterdeck. On the left is No. 4 gun, which is a Vickers 4-inch Mk. V. The gun is trained ahead of the port beam. Shackled to the bottom of the breech of the gun is a heavy chain which is attached to a ratchet gear which is in turn shackled to a fixing point on the deck. The ratchet gear is held above the deck by two ropes attached to fore-and-aft wires. The iron foundry is in the background with the post office at the end of the building.
