Collision damage to the starboard forecastle of the destroyer Kelvin (1939) in Portsmouth Dockyard, Hampshire
A close view of the hull damage to the starboard side of the destroyer Kelvin (1939) seen from just ahead of the beam while she is berthed in Portsmouth Dockyard. Her ready use shell racks have been damaged. The Kelvin was in collision with the cross channel steamer St Helier (1925) on 1 Dec. 1939, just three days after commissioning. Her hull was holed at station 24 in the seamen's mess on the upper deck where it joins the forecastle deck. Her number one gun mount is in the background.
