Bomb damage to the destroyer Witherington (1919) in dry dock in Portsmouth Dockyard, Hampshire

A close-up of the lower part of the ship's hull on the port side of the destroyer Witherington (1919) in dry dock in Portsmouth Dockyard, showing the hull and bilge keel damage between stations 71 and 89, taken from the bottom of the dock looking aft. This damage was caused by a bomb that exploded on the seabed. She was hit the three bombs while alongside a jetty at Portsmouth on the night of 10-11 Mar. 1941 and had to be beached on a mud bank. She was refloated and dry docked for repairs and conversion to short range escort.
