The damaged minelayer Apollo (1943) in dry dock in Portsmouth Dockyard, Hampshire

A close view of the starboard propeller and shaft of the minelayer Apollo (1943) in dry dock, Portsmouth Dockyard, taken from the bottom of the dock looking aft and to port. The outer arm of the A bracket is fractured and all three blades of the propeller are badly damaged. On 7 Jun. 1944 the Apollo (1943) was carrying staff officers of SHAEF, including General Eisenhower and Admiral Ramsay, on a tour of the Normandy assault areas when she ran aground and damaged her propellers and starboard A bracket. The Portsmouth Dockyard negative register number P233/44 has been written in the bottom right corner of the negative.
