Looking down on the port side of the upper deck abreast No. 3 gun mount of the United States destroyer Nelson (1942) on North Corner Jetty in Portsmouth Dockyard showing the damage to the superstructure supporting No. 3 gun mount. A stack of bunk mattress springs and a pile of damaged 5 inch shell containers are on the upper deck. Her stern was blown off by a torpedo from the German motor torpedo boat S.138 off Omaha Beach, Normandy, and temporary repairs were undertaken in Portsmouth Dockyard to enable her to get to Londonderry.
