The damaged United States Navy destroyer Nelson (1942) on North Corner Jetty in Portsmouth Dockyard, Hampshire
A port quarter view of the United States destroyer Nelson (1942) on North Corner Jetty in Portsmouth Dockyard. Her No. 3 gun mount has been removed and her crew, assisted by dockyard workmen are cutting away the mangled remains of her stern. Her starboard twin 40 mm Bofors is uncovered. A pontoon is alongside her port quarter. Everything forward of the bridge is out of the picture. Her stern was blown off by a torpedo from the German motor torpedo boat S.138 off Omaha Beach, Normandy, and temporary repairs were undertaken in Portsmouth Dockyard to enable her to get to Londonderry. In the background is the Polish light cruiser Dragon (1917) - note the twin 4 inch AA gun on the aft shelterdeck.
