The damaged United States Navy destroyer Nelson (1942) in D Lock in Portsmouth Dockyard, Hampshire
A starboard quarter view, taken from fine off the stern, of the United States destroyer Nelson (1942) afloat in D Lock in Portsmouth Dockyard. Her No. 3 gun mount has been removed and the above water wreckage of her stern has been mainly cleared. Her twin 40 mm Bofors are covered. Her masts are out of the picture. Her stern was blown off by a torpedo from the German motor torpedo boat S.138 off Omaha Beach, Normandy, and temporary repairs were undertaken in Portsmouth Dockyard to enable her to get to Londonderry.
