The damaged tank landing ship LST 404 (1942) beached on Ryde Sands, Isle of Wight, Hampshire

A close-up of the port side amidships of the tank landing ship LST 404 (1942), as seen from a boat, showing a large crack in the hull and severe damage to the upper deck. She is beached on Ryde Sands, Isle of Wight, having been towed there by the U.S. rescue tug ATR 4 (1943) after being torpedoed by the German submarine U.741 (1943) on 15 Aug. 1944 35 miles south-east of St Catherine's Point while in convoy FTM.69. She subsequently broke in half. The U.741 was counter-attacked and sunk by the British corvette Orchis with just one survivor.
