The construction of a new caisson for Singapore's King George VI Dry Dock in A Lock, Portsmouth Dockyard. The photographer is looking east-by-south from the caisson at the north-west end of the lock. The main structure is substantially complete and guardrails have been fitted to the top of the caisson. Two scotch cranes are on either side of the lock at the east end with spider cranes beyond them. Berthed in No. 3 Basin is the Ranpura (1924) undergoing conversion to a heavy repair ship. She has a floating crane alongside her.
