Kenyan boys on the Escarpment
A black and white landscape photograph showing Kenyan boys looking up at the camera. Ten boys of different ages are visible, with another figure partially in frame on the right of the image. They are standing in a loose group on a patch of bare ground. Most of the boys are looking up, towards the camera and some are smiling. The photographer appears to have been higher than the group, possibly in a vehicle. Most of the boys are wraped in blanket-like garments but one, in the foreground and to the right of the image, has a trench coat fasted by a belt. Two of the boys at the back are holding sticks, possibly rungus. A dog is visible in the bottom right of the image. A bank with vegetation growing on it can be seen in the background. Original caption (handwritten in ink beneath): 'THE "ESCARPMENT" / RIFT VALLEY - KENYA. E.AFRICA / SEPT. 1942'.
Rungus are a type of wooden throwing club traditionally used in by Maasai and some other groups in East Africa.
