Japanese wrestlers performing in from of British sailors
A black and white landscape photograph showing two Japanese wrestlers performing in front of watching British sailors. The two wrestles appear in the foreground, both naked apart from loincloths. The one towards the left of the image has his back and right shoulder turned to the camera, the one towards the right of the image has his left shouder turned the camera, his face visible, and has his left arm hand on the other man's upper arm. They are standing on a raised area or platform with sand or bare earth underfoot. Behind them and to the right of the image is another Japanese man in a unifom with a cap but barefoot, possibly a naval officer, who may be officiating. The legs and torso of another man wearing a loincloth, presumably another wrestler, can be seen on the right of the image. His right foot is wresting on the top of the platform with this right arm resting on his knee. Standing further back back, and slightly lower down, behind the plaform are around ten uniformed British sailors (mostly ratings but with at least one officer). They are watching the wrestlers and facing the camera. The verandah of a building can be seen in the backgound, with wooden pillars holding up a roof. Other people, including spectators, can been seen around this.Original caption (typed, beneath photograph on s separate label) [offensive]: 'On our arrival at Yokosuka we were taken to the Jap Naval Club where we witnessed exhibitions of wrestling, fencing, etc. Two splendid types of Jap Wrestlers.'.
