A three-quarter-length portrait of Alexander Hood (1726–1814) in captain’s undress uniform, 1748–1767, holding his sword in his right hand and leaning on a rock with a naval engagement in the background representing Hood’s ship, the ‘Minerva’, 32 guns, recapturing the ‘Warwick’, 60 guns, from the French in the Mediterranean in January 1761. Lettered beneath the image with the title: ‘Alexander, Lord Viscount Bridport, K. B. Admiral of the Red. Painted by Sir Joshua Reynolds P.R.A. Presented to Greenwich Hospital by the Viscountess Bridport.’ Also lettered with the publication details: ‘Engraved by H. Robinson. / London.
