'The Would-be Ninon'

The print relates to a story of the same name published in the literary album 'Friendship's Offering', edited by William Henry Harrison (1836).

The title of the story may refer to the 17th-century courtesan and writer Ninon de l' Enclos.

This print was published by the firm Smith, Elder & Co as were quite a number in the Herschel collection. The brother of Margaret Brodie Herschel (nee Stewart), Peter Stewart worked for Smith, Elder & Co as a printer.
