Chevron
Wool badge with one silver lace and three gold lace chevrons and a further badge with a single gold chevron. These badges denoted the wearer’s years of service in the First World War (1914–18). Chevrons of this type were introduced for officers in the Royal Navy in 1918. They were worn inverted on the right forearm. A silver chevron indicated that the wearer had been in service in 1914. Subsequent years of wartime service were then marked with the addition of gold chevrons. This set of chevrons belonged to Lieutenant-Commander (later Rear-Admiral) Denham Maurice Turner Bedford (1886–1974).
