American Yachts Plate XXIV. Steam Yachts, Stranger, Rover, and Atalanta. Under the Palisades

This chromolithograph depicts starboard broadside views of the two-master steam yacht ‘Stranger’ (1880), on the left, and the three-master steam yacht ‘Atalanta’ (1883), on the right. In the foreground is the steam launch ‘Rover’ (1883). All three vessels were registered at New York. Further vessels appear under sail in the distance with the steep cliffs of the New Jersey Palisades beyond. The artist’s signature and the date, ‘83’, are included at bottom left. A label on the reverse is inscribed ‘Artist's Proof No.99’.
The print was plate 24 in ‘American Yachts’, a series of twenty-seven chromolithographs published by Charles Scribner’s Sons, New York, in 1884, based on watercolours by maritime artist Frederic S. Cozzens (1846–1928). The series was accompanied by a volume of text by Lieutenant James Douglas Jerrold Kelley.
