Ship's bell

A ship's bell with a tall crown with six canons having tapered bases and an argent with rectangular hole and an almost flat top. Moulding wires are arranged from crown 2,2-2, 2-1. Rectangular section cast-in crown staple. The bell is inscribed '1787' on the inscription band, and has a borad arrow on the waist (top rear). The broad arrown shows that the bell was cast to a government order. The bell, which is representative of a typical bell cast at the Whitechapel Bell Foundry by William and Thomas Mears I. The bell hasLip to should at tangent 12 1/8 inches. Shoulder circumference 30 1/8 inches. Soundbow 1 3/8 inches. The mouth diameter is 17 3/8 inches.
