Bottle

Large liqueur or gin bottle commemorating Vice-Admiral Horatio Nelson (1758-1805). A green glass, round-bodied bottle with an indented base, the sides painted in oils. On one side is a half-length portrait surrounded by the inscription 'ADMIRA[L] LORD HORATIO NELSON'. Below the portrait is a naval action between 'HMS VICTORY' and the French 'RAISONNABLE' (the vessels' names are inscribed on their sterns). On the other side, Nelson's shield of arms is surrounded by the motto 'PALMAM QUI MERUIT FERAT' [let he who earned it bear the palm], with a viscount's coronet placed above. These items were used in licensed premises selling spirits, particularly in the Netherlands.
