The Noble Admiral Lord Nelson fell in the Arms of Victory

Picture transfer-printed on glass depicting a dying Nelson on the deck of 'Victory' supported by Britannia to the right. On the left Neptune kneels holding a trident and presenting the fallen hero with an olive branch. A naval action is shown in the background, a sinking vessel has 'S. TRINIDAD' on the stern - this Spanish prize was scuttled in the storm following the battle. Another British ship has the name 'ROYAL SOVEREIGN' across the stern in reverse, indicating that the name was added when the back of the glass was painted, rather than being part of the original print. 'Royal Sovereign' was the flagship of Nelson's second in command, Vice-Admiral Sir Cuthbert Collingwood. Inscribed below: 'The Noble Admiral LORD NELSON fell in the Arms of VICTORY by the wound in his left BREAST from a Musket shot in the memorable Battle on the 21st of Octbr. 1805 at CAPE TRAFALGAR off CADIZ on board his MAJESTY's SHIP the Victory, whilst engaging the SPANISH & FRENCH FLEETS where 19 Ships of the ENEMY'S LINE struck their Colours to the BRITISH FLAG, to the Glory of the English Navy.' The picture is mounted in a gold velvet edged frame.
