Snow knife

A relic of Sir John Franklin's last expedition 1845-48 obtained from the Inuit at Repulse Bay in 1854 by the Rae Expedition. A table knife which has been converted to a snow knife by the Inuit (snow knives were used to cut blocks of snow for building igloos). The curved steel blade is marked 'WIGFALL & CO'. It has been attached to a long wooden handle by two steel strips fixed by rivets. The wooden handle has a half-moon shaped bone pommel on the end secured by bone plates and bone pins.
