Portrait of a crew member on the passenger liner 'Aquitania' (1914) showing a full-length portrait of Mr William Henry Allison (1863-1939), the Chief Steward. The subject is in uniform and standing in the sheltered part of the First Class Promenade, on the starboard side of the Bridge Deck (B Deck).

Mr Allison was Chief Steward of the 'Aquitania' on the voyages prior to the First World War. He was born in Liverpool and had a home address in the Wavertree Park area of the city when this photograph was taken. He remained a member of the crew when the ship was requisitioned by the Admiralty as an armed merchant cruiser, being rated as a Chief Mess Man. At the end of his career with the Cunard Line he worked as a catering superintendent with the shore staff in New York.
