House flag, Dodwell & Co.

The house flag of Dodwell & Co. A white rectangular flag with a red cross overall and red borders. A black saltaire is in the canton. The flag is made of a wool and synthetic fibre bunting. It has a cotton hoist and is machine sewn. A rope is attached.

Dodwell & Co started life as W.R. Adamson & Company in 1858, exploiting trade with the Far East, particularly after the opening of the ports along the coast of China. The company traded in staple commodities such as silk and tea. Following a period of rapid growth George Dodwell rose to prominence in the company and was responsible to establishing the first regular steamship line across the Pacific. Following the retirement of Anderson, the company eventually became Dodwell, Carlill & Co from 1891. Their head office was in Hong Kong, trading with East Africa, New York, Manilla, New Zealand and Australia. In 1899, the name changed again to Dodwell & Co. Ltd. The company survived the setbacks of both wars including shipping losses and the liquidation of their entire Japanese holdings by the authorities. In 1973 the company was acquired by Inchcape plc. It was still trading as the Inchcape Shipping Group until this was taken over by the Li & Fung Group in 1995.
