John Flamsteed (1646-1719)

Head-and-part-shoulders Tisbury stone bust of John Flamsteed, the first Astronomer Royal at Greenwich from 1675 to 1719.

Flamsteed is shown facing forward, wearing a full wig behind the shoulders, and clerical bands. It is signed 'G. Elliott sculpt.' on the right side and was commissioned by the Royal Greenwich Observatory, then based at Herstmonceux Castle in Sussex, to mark the tercentenary of its 1675 foundation (at Greenwich) in 1975.

Elliott derived the likeness from by David le Marchand's ivory relief portrait and George Vertue's print after of an oil portrait by Thomas Gibson, engraved in Flamsteed's 'Historia Coelestis Britannica' (1725). A mould was also taken from this stone original, from which a bronze cast was made for the Royal Society, London, and one in bronzed cold-cast resin for the NMM.

The original bust was unveiled at Herstmonceux on 18 July 1975 and is one of a number of such items which were transferred to the custody of the Museum on the winding-up of the Royal Greenwich Observatory, by then housed at Cambridge, as a scientific research organization in 1998.
