Punch and Judy puppet: black servant
A glove puppet, part of a Punch and Judy set belonging to puppeteer Peter Butchard (1909-2009). This figure, which would have been known by the offensive historical term of 'golliwog', is probably the black servant who complains about Mr Punch's singing. The figure has a wooden head, hands and feet, with fabric hair attached with tacks. The legs are painted red and he has blue wool trousers, a checked white wool waistcoat and a red wool coat with a grey corderoy trim. The figure wears a tartan scarf. A plastic curtain ring is sewn to the reverse to hang the figure up.
