Medal commemorating the abolition of the slave trade

This medal, in its original holder, was produced for distribution in Sierra Leone and was intended to deter African traders from sending slaves to the coast. The obverse depicts a European and an African standing, facing each other, with hands clasped; beyond are huts, palms and Africans dancing and tilling the soil. It has the legend: 'WE ARE ALL BRETHREN', and the exergue: 'SLAVE TRADE ABOLISHED BY GREAT BRITAIN 1807'. On the reverse there is an Arabic inscription: 'Sale of slaves prohibited in 1807, Christian era, in the reign of George the Third; verily we are all brothers'.
