Walrus ivory spatula
Walrus ivory spatula-shaped item. It has carved grooves and a suspension hole at one end. It is likely to have been used for removing marrow from bones.
The item is part of a collection of ethnographic material made by Admiral Sir George Back (1796-1878). He possibly acquired it from Inuit who traded with vessels passing trough Hudson Strait. Back's collection was bequeathed to Greenwich Hospital in 1900 by Mrs Eliza Back, widow of Sir George's nephew - the Reverend Henry Back.
