table, drop leaf

Oak drop-leaf table, reputedly from one of Captain Cook's ships, though without a specific vessel association. It has two leaves on a heavy square section underframe with single gates, which conceal a substantial compartment under the top when the leaves are down. The top and leaves are made from quarter-sawn oak. A reproduction was made for the 'Endeavour' replica of 1994 and is reported in Antonia MacArthur's 'HM Bark Endeavour: the story of the ship and her people' to have fitted neatly into an available space.
