Sketchbook (Germany, St Paul's Cathedral etc)

Separated marble boards, remains of brown leather spine (8 1/4 x 11 ins). 41 ff. of sketches including in Germany, of St Paul's Cathedral, and of compositional ideas for marine and other pictures, one sheet carrying a verse in Stanfield's hand in praise of tobacco. Other inscriptions include the address of W. J. Huggins (marine painter and early friend) written by Stanfield inside the cover. Material dates from c. 1825 to 1850s. From the studio collection of Clarkson Stanfield RA, acquired 9.04 (Bagshawe Collection). [PvdM 5.06]
