Thermometer
Mercury thermometer, that belonged to Admiral Sir George Back (1796-1878). It is mounted in a carved wooden case with a keyhole for suspension at the back. An ivory label inscribed in ink under a glass panel at the back reads: ‘This Ther. was at 70° below Zero in 1834 at Fort Reliance East end of Gt. Slave Lake, America. It was the mean of 5 Thers. January [?] 17th 1834 Lat. 62. 46. 10. N. Geo. Back, Arctic Land Expedition.’ Marked with an old Royal Naval Museum number '(4)' . The case is carved with a fleur-de-lis at the top and foliage at the sides.
