Medal commemorating the Battle of the Four Days, 1666 and Admiral Michel Adrianzoon de Ruyter (1607-1676). Obverse: Bust of Admiral de Ruyter in a doublet and cravat with Order of St Michael (nearly front), supported by tritons holding a naval crown over his head, trophies behind. Legend (incuse): 'DE RUYTER DIE DEN BRIT SYN MOET GETEUGELT HEEFT, ALDUS, DOOR MULLERS HANT, INT GOUT EN SILUER LEEFT . AO MDCLXVI DEN XIII IUNY' (De Ruyter, who checked the courage of the English, thus lives in gold and silver by the hand of Müller). On a band below: 'M.A.D.RUYTER LUYT ADMIRAAL GEN'. Reverse: A naval engagement, starboard quarter view of two vessels in the foreground, a sunken wreck below. Legend (incuse): 'HIER STRYCKT HET BRITSCH GEWELT VOOR' NEDERLANDT DE VLAGH DE ZEE HEEFT NOIT GEWAEGHT VAN ZULK EEN' ZWAEREN SLAGH' (Here the English forces strike their flag to the Dutch. Never did the sea resound with such a tremendous conflict).
