Medal commemorating action off Cadiz, 1781. Obverse: Stern view of four vessels in action, one dismantled (left). Legend: 'VIS VI FORTITER REPULSA' (A bold attack boldly repulsed). Exergue: 'PROPE GADES XXX MAY, MDCCLXXXI' (Off Cadiz, 30 May 1781.) Reverse: A trident with three shields of the Rotterdam Admiralty upon it, and two anchors, engraved pennants on either side, 'P. MELVILLE NAVARCHUS' 'G. OORTHUIS NAVARCH'. Legend: 'ANTIQUA VIRTVTE DVVM-VIRI' (Two colleagues of ancient valour). Below, a festooned lion's head.
