Counter commemorating Cardinal Armand Jean Duplessis, Duc de Richelieu (1585-1642). Obverse: Bust of the cardinal in a cap and high collar (right). Legend: 'ARMAND . IO . CAR . DVX . DE . RICHELIEV.' Reverse: Starboard-quarter view of a three-masted vessel, sails furled, in a gale near the rocks, on fire astern. Legend: 'VEL IGNE VEL VNDIS.' ([Destroyed] either by fire or by the waves.) Exergue: '1640.'
