Cross-staff vane, part

Part of a cross-staff vane. A small wedge-shaped brass plate is fitted in the vane; it was pressed against the staff by the tightening screw, to clamp the vane without damaging the staff.

This item was recovered from the wreck of the ‘Stirling Castle’, which ran aground on the Goodwin Sands off the Kent coast during the Great Storm of 1703.
