Backstaff sighting vane
Wooden sight vane with an inlaid brass pinhole sight and a brass pressure plate for holding it tightly in place on the thirty degree arc.
The instrument was recovered from the wreck of the ‘Stirling Castle’, which ran aground on the Goodwin Sands off the Kent coast during the Great Storm of 1703.
