Medal commemorating the seizure of the steamboat 'Le Vautour', 1848. Obverse: Port broadside view of the forepart and paddle-box of a steamer. Inscription: (on paddle-box) 'LE VAUTOUR.'; a cloth inscribed 'SAISSI AU PROFIT DE LA REPUBLIQUE' (Seized for the profit of the Republic) slung on a rope stretching from a short mast to the bow. Legend: 'VAUTOURS'. Reverse: Inscription, a thunderbolt above, 'LE BATEAU A VAPEUR LE VAUTOUR PORTEUR DUNE FLAMME BLANCHE A SON ARRIVEE AU PORT EST SAISI PAR NOUS PEUPLE DE LYON ET PAR LE CITOYEN E. ARAGO AU NOM DE LA REPUBLIQUE 29 MARS 1848.' (The steamboat 'Vautour' carrying a white pennant on her arrival in port is seized by us the people of Lyon and by the citizen E. Arago in the name of the Republic 29 March 1848.) This little trading steamer was seized by the revolutionary mob, her crew imprisoned for a few hours but subsequently released, since it was proved that she was not sailing under monarchical colours.
