Medal commemorating the planned invasion of England, 1804. Obverse: Head of the Emperor Napoleon I (right). Reverse: Hercules standing strangling the Nemaean lion with a rope. Legend: 'EN L'AN XII 2000 BARQUES SONT CONSTRUITES.' (In the year XII 2000 barges were built.) In 1804 a large flotilla of small craft was assembled in seven ports along the north coast of France to transport Napoleon’s army across the Channel to England. It was under the supreme command of Vice-Admiral Bruix whose headquarters were at Boulogne.
