Ashtray
Ashtray made of piece of elm salvaged from RRS 'Discovery' when she was paid off in St Katherine's Dock during July 1931. A round wooden ashtray with a central knob and four depressions on the edge to rest cigarettes. A narrow silver-plated metal circle is fastened inside. It is inscribed: 'R.R.S. DISCOVERY 1931'. The ashtray was presented to Commander Charles Reid R.A.N. who sailed as 4th Officer with Sir Douglas Mawson's 1929-31 Antarctic Expedition, on the homeward voyage to London.
