Medal commemorating Lieutenant Otto Hersing and the sinking of 'Pathfinder', 'Triumph' and 'Majestic' by 'U21', 1915.
In command of 'U-21' throughout the First World War, Hersing was known as 'the destroyer of battleships'. In 1915, during the Gallipoli campaign, he sank both HMS 'Triumph' and HMS 'Majestic'. During his career as a commerce raider, he sank 40 allied naval vessels and merchant ships.

Obverse: Inside a border of two laurel branches issuing from a cornucopia, half-length figure of Lieutenant Hersing in uniform, without cap; the order 'Pour la mérite' suspended from a branch (left), 'U.21' (right). Exergue: 'HERSING.' Reverse: 'Majestic' torpedoed and sinking, another battleship in the distance, below her a small sea horse, hills behind. Inscription: 'PATHFINDER STRV GIBRALTAR TRIVMPH' (above); 'MAIESTIC' (below).
