Medal commemorating Captain-Lieutenant Otto von Weddigen (1882-1915)
Iron medal commemorating U-boat commander Cptain-Liuetenemtn Otto von Weddigen (1882-1915). On 22 September 1914, in just over an hour, his submarine ‘U-9’ sank the British cruisers ‘Aboukir’, ‘Cressy’ and ‘Hogue’, and a month later HMS ‘Hawke’. In march 1915, commanding ‘U-25’ Weddingen and his entire crew died when they were rammed by HMS ‘Dreadnought’ in the Pentland Firth.
