Binoculars

These prismatic binoculars are small and light but have no displacement of the objective lenses for stereographic rendition of the image. An inscription records that they were ‘MADE BY VOIGTLANDER & SON BRUNSWICK FOR LAWRENCE & MAYO LONDON’. It was the firm of Johann Voigtlander that re-introduced binoculars in the 1820s. In the 20th century, binoculars replaced the telescope as the main device used for making observations from ships.
