A vaporised oil burner

A vaporised oil burner, 1921.

First introduced at the beginning of the 20th century, this improved model by Hood came into service in 1921 as the main light source in lighthouses and manned stations. It is extremely reliable and fitted with a new type of ‘Autoform’ incandescent mantle.

The pressure of the oil vapour causes the impregnated silken mantle to develop it shape automatically. A few burners of this type are still in service at isolated stations awaiting electrification.
