Jug

White stoneware jug with a gilt rim, commemorating Vice-Admiral Horatio Nelson (1758-1805). The neck is reeded, and the upper part of the jug and the top of the handle are glazed dark brown. The bottom of the jug is decorated with cane-ribbed moulding and the handle terminates in acanthus leaves. The surface of the body is roughened and has applied reliefs. One side shows Britannia with a shield, spear, lion and cornucopia pointing to Victory who blows a trumpet and holds a wreath. A warship is placed under the lip and on the other side is a uniformed figure of a naval officer holding a speaking trumpet, with a missing right arm, who is intended to represent Nelson. There is a gun behind him and trophies above. The maker's mark is impressed on the base.
