Ephemera 58: 14 page typescript diary kept by Hilliard on board HMS Majestic (1895) from April-June 1901 and then on board HMS Canopus (1897) from June 1901-May 1902. Includes an account of his passage in P&O ship Syria to Malta to join Canopus. Description of duties on board –gunnery practise, manoeuvres and sailing regattas in the Mediterranean as well as various sightseeing trips when ashore in Greece, Syracuse and Turkey and life at their base in Malta – rifle practice at the range as well as visits to the Garrison library and theatre. He contracted a fever and was sent to Bighi Hospital, April 1902 and was sent back to England in the hospital ship, Maine arriving at Haslar Hospital, 31 May 1902.
