Shell damage suffered to the battleship HMS Warspite (1913) at the battle of Jutland

A view from the dockside at roughly main deck level of the starboard side just aft of 'Y' turret, showing damage suffered by HMS Warspite (1913) on 31 May 1916 during the Battle of Jutland. It shows blast damage caused to the starboard hull plating by a 28 cm (12 inch) shell which penetrated the port side of the upper deck, passed through the captain's accommodation and bursting in the Captain of the Fleet's day cabin on the starboard side of the main deck under 'Y' 15 inch gun turret. This photograph was taken in No.1 Dry Dock at Rosyth. The hole made by the shell's entry is shown in N16495 and the internal effects of the damage in N16499.
