Atlas sheet from an edition of Theatrum Orbis Terrarum with Latin text, published in 1573. Hand coloured copperplate engraving. The bar scale, with a pair of dividers, is in English miles. Scale approximately 1:500,000.
Humphrey Lloyd sent the manuscript of his map of Wales to Ortelius before 1568. Ortelius' engraving of it was first published in the 1573 edition of the Theatrum. This is the earliest printed map to represent Wales (with the addition of a sizeable area of the English borders) as a separate region. Names are given in Latin, English and 'British'.
