A Naval battery at one of the emplacements outside Ladysmith during the siege.
A general view of one of the gun emplacements outside Ladysmith during the siege between November 1899 and March 1900. The gun is one of the 12 pounder breech-loading guns from HMS Terrible (1895), mounted on a carriage designed by Captain Percy Scott. The gun and the six sailors standing by it are protected by a bank of sandbags, soil, and rocks. It is not known which of the emplacements this is, as they were shifted from place to place as necessity dictated. Only one was retained at Gordon Hill for the whole siege.
