Food pounder

A food pounder with a cross bar, made of black basalt. It would have been used to crush edible fruits and roots such as bread-fruit and taro on a stone or wooden surface, which often had four feet. The paste which the Tahitians called 'mahi' was then fermented. The basalt comes from the island of Maupiti. Formerly in the collections of the London Missionary Society.
