Gold cigarette case

Gold cigarette case presented 1917 to Admiral Sir Guy Reginald Arthur Gaunt KCMG CB (1870-1953).

14 carat gold case with a sprung hinge along the narrow side, and a gold sprung retaining clip inside. The cover with reeded decoration and a small rectangle in the top left corner is inscribed 'CAPTAIN GUY GUANT [sic] RN' and at the lower edge: 'NAVAL COMMITTEE H. OF R. USA.'.

Inside the lid is engraved 'Presented to Capt. Guy Gaunt RN by the Naval Committee House of Representatives Washington DC USA 1917.'. It is signed 'Franklin D Roosevelt'. The right side of the inside is inscribed 'ADMIRAL SIR GUY GAUNT. UNITED SERVICE CLUB.', and the following signatures are engraved in facsimile: 'My dear Admiral, yours siny. Winston Churchill' and 'My dear Admiral C A Atlee'.

Gaunt was Naval Attache and Chief of the British Intelligence Service in Washington 1914-18. He is said to have been immensely proud of this presentation by Congress.
