Gilbert and Ellice Islands Outrigger

Scale: Unknown. A full hull model of a single outrigger sailing canoe, from the Gilbert and Ellis Islands, now present-day Kiribati and Tuvalu, made entirely in wood with organic material fittings. The hull is carvel planked with sewn fibre fastenings. The single mast has three foot positions and a triangular woven fibre matting lug sail, with natural fibre rigging. Fittings and equipment includes a bailer and a single outrigger rigged to the port side.
