Passenger vessel; Canoe, Birch bark

Scale: Unknown. A model of a Central Canadian birch bark canoe made from wood and animal skin. The hull is constructed by plank-on-frame with varying frame widths and visible planking which is painted a uniform black. The hull is covered by several pieces of animal hide stitched together which are sewn to the bulwarks securing them to the hull. The hull is double-ended (one end has been broken off) and open with a single thwart in the centre of the vessel. At the complete end of the model, inboard, there is a carved piece of wood whose purpose is not known.

The high stem and stern indicate that this vessel is an Eastern Ojibway or Algonkin type canoe.
